Middle Run Natural Area

Discover this beautiful county-owned park that Delaware Nature Society manages to benefit biodiversity. Our Middle Run Reforestation Project is a volunteer-driven effort that improves the quality of the watershed through the planting of more than 50,000 trees and shrubs since 1991.
 

The Middle Run Birding Trail is a carefully-managed showcase for the reforestation project and is the premier location in Delaware for viewing migrant songbirds – particularly in Fall migration.

At this Middle Run Pond Complex view wetland wildlife like herons, egrets, ducks, and geese. An active Beaver dam creates a unique flooded thicket hosting diverse aquatic plants and animals.

During our 2017 BioBlitz we found

  • 88 species of birds including 20 warbler species
  • 100 insects were ID'd to the family level
    - its a bird smorgasbord!
  • 50 different species of plants - many were native which benefits native birds and wildlife

Explore the world of birds at Middle Run Natural Area. Help Tri-State Bird Rescue volunteers take care of baby birds, photograph baby birds in bird boxes, and monitor nesting birds along the Middle Run Birding Trail. Meet unique birds like tree swallows, indigo buntings, and Eastern bluebirds. Create nest boxes, feeders, and treats for the birds. Directions to Middle Run will be provided. Led by Dawn Coughlan
