Great Backyard Bird Count

2nd weekend in February
A four day count you can do in your backyard or anywhere on earth.

Spring Roundup

2nd Saturday in May
One-day count of birds in Delaware. Throughout the state, with regional leaders in charge of various state sections.

Fort Delaware Wading Bird Count

Monthly, spring – early summer
Stationary count of herons and egrets flying to and from Pea Patch Island conducted from the Delaware City Waterfront.

Bird-a-thon

Early May
Fundraiser for the Delmarva Ornithology to provide money for shorebird habitat acquisition in Delaware.

Hawk Watch

Daily, September – November
Stationary count sites established to count migrating raptors
Location: Ashland Nature Center and Cape Henlopen State Park

Big Sit

2nd weekend in Oct
A competition to see or hear the most bird species from one spot.
Location: DNS runs big sits at DEEC, Ashland, and Bucktoe. Another one occurs at Cape Henlopen Hawk Watch

Monthly, October – March
Stationary count of migrating seabirds
Location: Indian River Inlet

Christmas Bird Counts

Mid-December – early January
Bird surveys within several 15-mile diameter circles within Delaware.
Location: Wilmington, Middletown, Bombay Hook, Milford, Seaford, Cape Henlopen, and Rehoboth in DE
