Mayor Purzycki Announces Wilmington Youth Environment Corps Program For City Teens In Partnership With Delaware Nature Society
Mayor and Parks Director Kelley invite City residents between the ages of 14 and 17 to apply for the nine-session program that begins October 24
Wilmington Mayor Mike Purzycki and Director of Parks and Recreation Kevin Kelley today encouraged the City’s younger residents, ages 14 to 17, to apply now for the 2019-20 Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps (WYEC). This is a FREE nine-session program for Wilmington residents that provides hands-on outdoor activities, career exploration, exposure to environmental issues, and mentoring. The program is being offered in partnership with the Delaware Nature Society at the William “Hicks” Anderson Community Center at 501 North Madison Street.
Two semesters will be offered—one now, in the Fall of 2019, and the other in the Spring of 2020. There will be a new group of teens selected for each semester. Participants will complete six after-school sessions, one community service project and one field trip as well as attend a closing ceremony. Each participant will also earn a $500 stipend.
“The Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps has been offered during the summer as part of Wilmington’s Youth Career Development Program, and we are very excited to have these additional opportunities for our young people,” said Mayor Purzycki. “The WYEC enables young people to explore the outdoors and learn about the natural world as well crucial environmental issues that affect all of our lives directly,” the Mayor said. “In addition to being mentored and learning about environmental career opportunities, the teen participants will be making a positive difference in the community. Kevin and I urge young people to sign up today.”
The Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps Fall semester begins Thursday, October 24, and will conclude with a closing ceremony on Thursday, December 12, 2019. The remaining sessions include Thursday, October 31; Thursday, November 7; Thursday, November 14; Saturday, November 16 (Field Trip); Thursday, November 21; Saturday, November 23 (Community Project); and Thursday, December 5.
The Thursday classes will be held after school at the Williams “Hicks” Anderson Center on Madison Street. Applications for the Wilmington Youth Environmental Corps can be obtained at the center as well as the DuPont Environmental Education Center at 1400 Delmarva Lane.
