Job Description

The Summer Camp Instructor is responsible for creating and implementing lesson plans for a week long of developmentally-appropriate educational lessons and activities with emphasis on nature and the outdoors. This position will meet with Coverdale Farm’s Site Coordinator to ensure camp plans are in line with Delaware Nature Society’s Mission and help generate ideas and support for the instructor. They are responsible for creating a safe, fun, and rewarding environment for the campers, counselors, interns and other participants. Instructors maintain daily communication with parents and work with the education team to provide a high-quality summer camp experience!

This is position an hourly position that will teach a minimum of 3 weeks of summer camp based on the need and assessment of the Farmyard and Summer Camp Coordinator.

Responsibilities

  • Develop and lead organized outdoor/indoor activities during the week long summer camp that are developmentally appropriate, engaging, fun and safe for children
  • Coordinate with Coordinator and Education Team to ensure program quality and safety
  • Responsible for camp program preparation and clean-up and with care and handling of program materials and equipment
  • Ensure safety and well-being of all campers and counselors
  • Communicate with parents through pre-camp parent letters and camp week communications
  • Participate in instructor training events and activities
  • Assist with regular camp day sign in and sign out

Minimum Qualifications

  • Degree in a field pertaining to the environment, agriculture, wildlife, or education
  • Teaching experience or experience working with children
  • Experience with group management in a non-traditional setting
  • Excellent communication skills with an ease and enthusiasm for talking to individuals of all ages
  • Ability to interact in a positive and professional manner at all times
  • Organized, willing to take initiative, think and act proactively to solve problems and assess priorities, and manage a variety of tasks calmly and effectively
  • Flexibility and adaptability to work a schedule that meets the needs of the site
  • Punctuality, dependability
  • Willingness to learn new skills and share knowledge with others
  • Ability to work indoors and outdoors under variable weather conditions and terrain
  • Ability to work effectively and productively as part of a team
  • Outdoor recreation skills and experience (hiking, camping, outdoor photography, gardening)
  • Valid Drivers License
  • 21 years of age or older

Essential Dates

There will several trainings prior to the start of the summer camp season.

Summer Camp runs weekly from June 13 – August 26 and the camp day lasts from 8 am – 3 pm.

Salary and Benefits

Summer Camp Instructors commitments are per week. Each week includes pay for the camp week (half day camp 20 hours; full day camp 35 hours) plus an additional 10 hours to encompass preparation and training. Payment is deposited bi-monthly with all required federal and state taxes withheld.
