Parent’s Corner – Get Ready for your Summer Camp

Enrolled in our summer camps? Read below for more information about our Summer Camps to help get your camper ready!

If you’re not enrolled, check out our Summer Camps.

Summer Camp at Delaware Nature Society (DelNature) is all about getting outdoors, exploring, and discovering. DelNature camps offer a unique and safe summer experience in natural areas and preserves while connecting children with nature through hands-on, outdoor experiences.

Basic Policies for All Summer Camps

  • Absence: If your child is not able to attend on a particular day, please let us know promptly so  the class is not delayed waiting for your child’s arrival. See below for contact information at your camp’s site.
  • Non-Parent Pick-Up: Please Contact our registrar (Mon – Fri, 9am – 4pm. Messages received outside of business hours will be responded to during business hours.) to add a person other than the parent or guardian to your child’s authorized pick up list if you haven’t already. IDs will be checked at pick up.
  • Inclement Weather at Pick-Up: In case of heavy rain or thunderstorms please stay in your car  until the storm abates. We will keep the campers in a safe, dry place during inclement weather and staff will then bring the campers out for pick up. Please note this may result in late pick up.  Parents who cannot wait out the thunderstorm at pick up are welcome to pick up their child early.
  • Road Closures: During the summer, construction and road closures happen. We will do our best  to alert you of these as we become aware of them. Updates will be posted on our website and  the DelNature Facebook page.
  • Lunch & Snacks Campers should bring  water, lunch and snacks.  If refrigeration is needed, campers will be asked to use an “Igloo” or similar personal lunch box with a cold pack. Water bottles can be refilled at the water fountain.
  • All allergies (food or other), emotional, physical & behavioral exceptionalities, restrictions, or medical needs must be listed on your child’s registration form, so that we can ensure they have a safe  and quality camp experience. If you have not done this, contact our registrar (Mon – Fri, 9am – 4pm. Messages received outside of business hours will be responded to during business hours.) to update your child’s current information. Bring any  medications labeled and in a Ziploc bag when you drop off your child. Medications must be accompanied with a Parent Permission Form For Medication.
  • Sick Policy: We ask parents to screen their child for illness before coming to camp each morning. If your child is showing any signs of illness, please keep them home. We will send children showing signs of illness home.
  • COVID Policy: To ensure the safety and health of our campers and staff, we are, again, implementing safety procedures required by the State of Delaware, and are following CDC recommendations for recreational camps.
  • Refunds, Cancellations & Transfers: Requests for withdrawal 15 days or more prior to a scheduled camp start date will be honored. Refunds for withdrawal fewer than 15 business days prior to start date will be issued only if the slot is filled. A $50 administrative fee will be withheld for each camp withdrawal regardless of withdrawal date. Every effort to accommodate transfers to a different camp will be made. A $35 administrative fee will be charged for transfers.

On Monday morning – please plan to leave a little extra time to drop off your child(ren). Keep in mind – This is the first time we are meeting your children and first time they are meeting us. Sometimes younger children may be a little hesitant so preparing them ahead of time may be helpful. Drop off starts at 8:20 and is typically over by 8:45am. BUT on Monday please plan that drop-off could last a little longer. Tuesday-Friday does go a lot quicker. Read below for specific drop off and pick up procedures.

There are a few ways you can help make this process easier, smoother, and quicker.

  • If you have any questions/concerns about the camp/your child/early dismissal – please talk to us ahead of time
  • Prepare your child – especially for young children -explain the process – The drop-off and pick-up are a “drive through” where only the child gets out of the car. So, goodbyes/hugs/kisses/ happen in the car and the camp staff will help your children to the camp instructor
  • Organize your child’s items so it is easy to grab as they get out of the car.
  • Put sunscreen/bug spray on before arriving
  • Be understanding and patient through the process. Our primary job is to keep everyone safe and to do that – it sometimes takes a little longer than normal.

Island Adventures

Pick up for the extended day on Thursday (July 7th) will be from 6:15pm to 6:30pm. This day only, please park and pick up campers in the picnic area off the main parking lot.

Extra items to bring and wear each day

  • Paddling means getting wet! Please wear “quick drying” clothes (no cotton or jeans,) a hat,
sunglasses, closed-toed water shoes or old sneakers (no flip-flops,) and sunscreen. You are
welcome to wear a bathing suit under your clothes, but we will not do any actual swimming Monday
    or Wednesday.
  • Packing List – 2 bags each day:
    • Bag #1: This bag will come with you on the water. If you have one, bring a “dry bag.”
You can find these bags at Cabelas, REI, Amazon, etc. I bought a 20L one at Walmart for
under $10 and it fits everything I need and has worked great! If you don’t have a dry bag,
just pack lunch (and any other items you do not want to get wet) in large Ziploc bags inside
      your backpack.

      • Pack: Lunch, one 32 ounce water bottle (not a disposable water bottle), sunscreen,
bug spray, lightweight rain jacket or poncho, and any medications needed.
    •  Bag #2 (optional, stays in the van): Dry clothes to change into, towel, extra shoes,
and anything else you do not want to bring on the boat but want to have with you.
Otherwise, just plan to go home a little damp.
  •  Blisters from paddling are possible! If you would like to bring biking/kayaking/sport gloves or
moleskin bandages, they might come in handy!
