Nighthawk Watch
Daily, 3 pm – dusk (August 23 – September 4) | Bucktoe
Take a picnic dinner along with your binoculars and scan the skies for migrating Nighthawks. Led by Larry Lewis. These birds in the “Nightjar” family can put on a show as they wheel through the air to pursue moths, beetles and other large insects.

Families can visit, hike at Ashland to have fun outside! Learn about bird migration from an expert at Hawk Watch from 10am-noon and try out some binoculars! Visit the Butterfly House from noon-3pm to learn all about butterflies!

Visit Ashland’s Hawk Watch Hill for the 15th annual Ashland Hawk Watch to scan the skies for migratory hawks, eagles, falcons, and many other birds. Better yet, join our volunteer team to help record data and look for birds on the move! Led by our Hawk Watch Coordinator and Hawk Watch Volunteers.

Bird Banding

Watching a bird bander at work, learn about feather molt, how to age a bird, migration, feeding, and bird conservation. Photographers: great opportunity for bird close-ups. Weather dependent. Contact Ian Stewart, Ornithologist the day before to confirm start/end times.

Shorebird and Kite Watch
Returning in May 2024: Daily, 3 pm – 8pm (May 17 – June 6) | Bucktoe
Join the nightly search for shorebirds flying overhead from Delaware Bay to the Arctic. Look for Mississippi Kites, a southern raptor that appears here every spring. Bring a picnic dinner, a beverage, and enjoy!
