Jasper Dark Sky Festival: Canadian Rockies Adventure EcoTour

Join Delaware Nature Society for an adventurous trip to the Canadian Rockies during Canada’s largest celebration of the night sky.

Trip Overview

9-Day Tour from Vancouver to Calgary – Postponed to 20201, Date TBD

Jasper Dark Sky - map of EcoTourBegin your adventure in the forested seaside city of Vancouver for guided sightseeing before traveling through the lush valleys and mountain passes to the historic village of Kamloops. Stroll along the South Thompson River and enjoy the sights in this historic mining, railroad, and cattle town.

Then continue to Jasper—considered the largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world. Enjoy a special community moon viewing with high-powered telescopes.

Enjoy free time to explore Jasper National Park or the Jasper Wildlife Museum, then attend the Jasper Planetarium & Telescope Experience. Learn about this spectacular Dark Sky Preserve in a dome theater experience, complete with the most powerful telescope in the Rocky Mountains. Venture outside to look for the red, blue, and green flashes of the Northern Lights.

Spend a day at Jasper’s Dark Sky Festival to re-visit the planetarium or join Judy on the trails to look for elk, moose, caribou and other wildlife.

Next you’ll travel to the lovely shores of Lake Louise for an overnight stay at the majestic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. You may choose to join Judy for a guided walk or just relax at this world-renowned lakeside resort. You’ll then travel to Banff National Park for sightseeing, including at Bow Falls. Spend two nights in Banff, with time to explore on your own, ride the gondola for nighttime sky-viewing, or soak in the natural hot springs in this remarkable Rocky Mountain setting.

Daily Itinerary

Jasper Dark Sky lakeDay 1: Arrive in Vancouver

Welcome to Vancouver! At 6 p.m., meet Judy and all your traveling companions for a welcome drink. Your Globus Tour Director will prepare you for your upcoming adventure.

Day 2: Vancouver – Kamloops

This morning, tour Vancouver including the waterfront, Chinatown, and Stanley Park with its old-growth evergreen forests and totem poles. Later, travel east through lush valleys and over mountain passes to Kamloops, a historic village with links to mining, railways, and British Columbia’s thriving cattle industry. Tonight, why not visit a local restaurant, brewery, or stroll along the banks of the South Thompson River.

Day 3: Kamloops – Jasper

After breakfast, continue east through the scenic Canadian Rockies to Jasper, recognized as the second largest Dark Sky Preserve in the world due to its limited light pollution and expansive wilderness. After a sightseeing tour, enjoy a hike with Judy to look for wildlife on the trails around town. Tonight, a special community moon viewing with Parks Canada interpreters. An assortment of telescopes will be set up for everyone’s enjoyment.

Today is yours to discover all that Jasper National Park has to offer. Join Judy for an optional hike. Bring your binoculars and perhaps we’ll spot a White-Tailed Ptarmigan, Bohemian Waxwing or Golden Eagle. Tonight, enjoy the Jasper Planetarium and Telescope Experience to hear the story of Jasper’s Dark Sky Preserve via a dome theater experience followed by a tour of the largest and most powerful telescope in the Rockies. Here, learn how the telescope works and see the latest imagery from the night skies above. Later, you may choose to venture out in search of the Northern Lights, dazzling dashes of red, blue, and green streaking across the sky only to melt and regroup before your eyes.

Day 5: Jasper

A day to explore all the wonders of the Dark Sky Festival. Plus, Judy will be back on the trails to look for elk, moose, caribou, mountain goats, bighorn sheep, pika, marmots, bears and more. Tonight, join your Tour Director for a special keynote presentation with notable guest speakers sharing their astronomic experiences.

Day 6: Jasper – Lake Louise

After a morning at leisure, we travel to the beautiful shores of Lake Louise and the majestic Fairmont Chateau Lake Louise. Take in the fresh air and marvel at the incredible mountain scenery. You may choose to take a leisurely walk around the lake with Judy, ride the gondola in search of bears, or simply relax at the resort.

Day 7: Lake Louise – Banff

This morning is at leisure to relax and recharge or explore the elegant alpine paradise. Later, travel to Banff National Park, where sightseeing includes a visit to Bow Falls. Judy will lead a special birding hike at Bow Falls to look for the American Dipper, Varied Thrush and Crossbills.
Spend two nights in Banff where your hotel is located within easy walking distance to the heart of downtown.

Spend a full free day to explore Banff on your own. You may wish to stroll along Banff Avenue visiting shops and galleries. Other options include visiting one of the town’s museums, taking a soak in the natural hot springs, enjoying a massage, or striking up a conversation with a local at one of the town’s coffee shops. Tonight, join your Tour Director for a festive farewell dinner, the perfect ending to your adventure.

Day 9: Banff – Calgary

Your tour comes to a close today as you arrive at Calgary International Airport for your flight home. Flights should be scheduled after 2 pm.

Margo McDonough

Margo is the owner of Blue Skies Travel Center and a former Delaware Nature Society employee, a current Delaware Nature Society member, and a former columnist for The News-Journal. She wrote the “Native Delaware” column for eight years and often interviewed Delaware Nature Society naturalists for these articles.
