Our staff leaders coordinate with topnotch travel agencies and the country's/region's best naturalists to present experiences that cannot be matched by any other group.     See one of the greatest wildlife spectacles in North America as half-a-million Sandhill Cranes converge on the Platte River of Nebraska in late March. Observe these birds at sunset and sunrise from blinds along the river as they play, court, fly and bugle their ancient and dramatic calls. Also, fall in love with the Sandhill region, America's last great prairie and the "real" Nebraska. Here you will see the amazing mating displays of Greater Prairie-chicken and Sharp-tailed Grouse on their leks. Look for migrant waterfowl, American White Pelicans, raptors, and songbirds as you are immersed in this vast ant beautiful ecosystem. Visit a Prairie Dog town and take a guided trip into the Sandhill backcountry with our hosts from the 12,000-acre ranch that will be your home for 3 of the 4 nights on this trip.

    Experience the tropical island of Trinidad and the myriad of birds, butterflies and other tropical wildlife. Your visit will coincide with nesting season of the spectacular and endangered Leatherback Sea Turtle, the largest in the world. Experience one of the most remarkable moments in nature as you watch these incredible creatures excavate their nest and lay eggs. While staying at the world-renowned Asa Wright Nature Center, awaken each day to the sound of the Crested Oropendola, a huge oriole-like bird. Sip coffee grown on-site and see 20-30 life birds at the veranda feeding station before breakfast! Venture over the Northern Range to the seaside village of Blanchisseuse and enjoy multiple stops to see various tropical forest-dwelling species. A wide variety of species will be seen and photographic opportunities will arise on a day-trip to the Nariva Swamp, the largest freshwater swamp in Trinidad, edged with "palm islands" and containing Green-rumped Parrotlet, Red-bellied Macaw and Red Howler Monkey!

    Visit the Aripo Savannah where you will see Yellow-rumped Cacique, Gray-headed Kite, Southern Lapwing and Savannah Hawk. One evening, return here to find nocturnal birds such as the White-tailed Nightjar, Common Paraque, Common Pootoo and Tropical Screech-owl. On your final day, experience two world-class spectacles of the natural world. In the morning, visit Dunstan Cave to view the most accessible colony of Oilbird in the world and see this frugivorous, huge nocturnal species nesting on the cliff walls. That evening, boat through the famous Caroni mangrove swamp and view the spectacular flight of Scarlet Ibis returning to roost. This is truly another one of the world's most dramatic natural moments.     Spring Splendor in the Pennsylvania Wilds

    Venture to the "Pennsylvania Wilds" in the Allegheny Mountains in search of springtime in full force. The Keystone State's scenic north-central region will be awash in blooming wildflowers, singing songbirds, and herds of wild elk. Tour a special elk refuge to learn more about these unique inhabitants of the Wilds. Hike to a scenic waterfall and explore the largest stand of White Birches in Pennsylvania. Incredibly clear skies allow for the study of constellations and planets. Home to 25 species of breeding warblers and a wide variety of amphibians, the area is a naturalist's delight at every turn. Lodging is at Wapiti Woods, a comfortable modern-cabin facility with double occupancy bedrooms in the heart of the elk-viewing region. Travel to Elk County is 5 hours by van from Ashland Nature Center. A pre-trip meeting will be held. Fee includes van transportation, lodging, fees, meals and leadership.


    Ridges, Valleys and Raptors

    Explore central Pennsylvania's diverse ridge and valley province. Enjoy the winter woods as you stand beneath towering virgin eastern hemlocks in Alan Seeger Natural Area and wander through dense rhododendrons in Bear Meadows Natural Area, a unique boreal bog remnant. Visit Tussey Mountain, the Golden Eagle spring capital of the east during their peak migration. Discover the adaptations of hawks, owls and eagles at the Shaver's Creek Environmental and Raptor Center, home to non-releasable rehabilitated birds. Explore other top birding areas to discover wintering finches and other species. Accommodations will be in small cabins along Lake Perez in the Stone Valley Recreation Area. Breakfast and lunch will be provided on Saturday, as well as breakfast on Sunday.
