Year-long Education Internship

Stipend: $14,800 + housing

  • Assisting with summer camp programs, which may include canoeing, kayaking, camping, hiking, fishing, photography, and many other exciting adventures.
  • Intern housing on property (more information below).
  • Opportunity to take the Environmental Institute Management graduate course (6 credits).
  • Exploring the many preserves managed by the Delaware Nature Society.
  • Field trips to local natural history museums, state parks, nature centers, waterways, etc.
  • Working with the animal collection and implementing them into programs.
  • Opportunity to participate with activities at Coverdale Farm.

Intern Housing:
  • Fully furnished, renovated farmhouse in a serene setting on the Ashland Nature Center property.
  • 3 bedroom, 1 1/2 bathrooms, hardwood floors, screened in front porch.
General Description:
Year-long Education Interns assist in the teaching, preparation, and scheduling of education programs for children and adults from school groups and the general public at Ashland Nature Center and Coverdale Farm, at Delaware Nature Society preserve sites, and around the region. Interns attend instructor-training workshops and develop an independent project based on individual interests and the needs of the organization. During the summer, interns co-teach eight weeks of summer camp programs. There is a summer-only internship option.

Responsibilities:
  • Assists with biannual scheduling of field studies by public and private school teachers. Attends instructor-training workshops. Teaches field studies, overnight, and outreach programs each day as needed. Helps with program preparation and maintenance of equipment/teaching tools. (time allocated: 60%)
  • Co-teaches eight weeks of summer members programs. Participates in one week of staff training and camp preparation. (time allocated: 30%)
  • Teaches as needed during public overnight programs. Assists the public overnight staff team with lodge inspection and monitoring. (time allocated: 10%)
Minimum Qualifications:
  • Bachelors degree in science, education, or recreation
  • Teaching experience or experience working with children
  • Natural sciences knowledge and public relations skills
  • Computer skills
