Weekly Bird and Nature Walk

Explore the swamps, forests, and fields of the Milford Millponds Nature Preserve for migratory and resident birds. Learn about the trees, reptiles, amphibians, and mammals. Binoculars are available for use.

Running of the Mill
3rd Saturday of the month, 2-3 pm

Take a guided tour of historic Abbott's Mill. Learn about the unique history of the mill, dating back to 1795. Experience the rush of the water through the turbine and feel the rumble of the mill stones. Please note that there are no mill tours from December to February.

Whether you are just beginning your interest in nature, or wish to gain greater depth of understanding of local ecosystems, take advantage of this Fall-Spring course! Learn about the ecology of the Coastal Plain region during nine lectures and field trips led by a naturalist. Each participant will complete a field and classroom notebook in order to become certified. Receive a certificate and patch upon completion of the course.

Enjoy a unique tour of the town of Milton, Delaware. Meet at Abbott's Mill Nature Center and head to the Broadkill River in Milton. Take a kayak tour to the Nature Conservancy's McCabe Nature Preserve and hike around this beautiful riparian woodland. Paddle back to Milton and then roll up the road to Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales for an in-depth tour of this world-renowned brewery. Relax after the tour while enjoying a variety of ale samples in the Brewery gift shop. Pack a bag lunch.

Get into some crafty water conservation, Rain Barrel style. Build your own with barrels from Dogfish Head Craft Brewed Ales in Milton, Delaware. Have a ball as you install spigots and nozzles, and get ready to catch your roof run-off. Sample some specialty brew whose ingredients formerly resided in your barrel.

Claude E. Phillips Herbarium and Natural Areas

Visit the Claude E. Phillips Herbarium in Dover and explore a collection of 150,000 pressed flowering plants, gymnosperms, ferns, mosses, algae and lichens, some dating back to 1799. Among the highlights is the Nuttall's mudflower, a native wetland plant that has not been seen in the wild for 70 years. Stroll the Woodland Trail to discover botanical treasures, including one of the state's biggest sweet bay magnolias. Finish the day with a stop at a local wildlife hotspot to search for Bald Eagles and waterfowl. Bring a bag lunch. Includes van transportation from Abbott's Mill Nature Center.

Blackwater Wildlife Tour

Despite the fall chill, Blackwater National Wildlife Refuge in Maryland is a premier wildlife observation destination on the Eastern Shore. The refuge hosts many Bald Eagles and waterfowl and is one of the best sites on the peninsula to see the endangered Delmarva Fox Squirrel. Pack a bag lunch. Van departs from Abbott's Mill at 7:30am.

Do you enjoy hiking, canoeing, wildlife, and being outdoors? Join the Abbott's Mill Teen Naturalists! Meet once a month for outdoor activities, volunteering at DNS events, and embark on a special summer trip. A campfire cookout information session will be held in September. Outing dates will be sent to registrants, but will include half and full days outings and overnights on Friday evenings, Saturdays, Sundays, or public school days off. Registration fee does not include cost for occasional overnight trips or a weeklong summer trip.
