Advocacy in Action

Get informed, take action and make a
difference for Delaware's environment!

For over four decades, the Delaware Nature Society has worked aggressively, through a scientific, fact-based approach, to be a leading voice encouraging conservation and protection of Delaware's natural resources. We have worked to gain funding for farmland and open space preservation, protect threatened and endangered species such as the red knot, and advocate for sound, environmentally responsible energy policies. As the state affiliate for the National Wildlife Federation, the Delaware Nature Society addresses more than 50 environmental issues on the federal, state, and local level.

Advocacy at DNS

The Delaware Nature Society has a long and proud tradition of environmental advocacy stemming back almost half a century. The first initiative began in 1966 when the Society actively opposed an amendment that would have weakened the federal Land & Water Conservation Fund. Since then, the Society has been involved in influencing public policy in Delaware on topics ranging from water and air quality to open space preservation and solid waste management. All advocacy initiatives at DNS are supported by the Society's commitment to developing balanced positions and practical solutions to environmental problems based on an objective review of scientific facts.

Recently, DNS and its partners were successful in securing the inclusion of $10 million into the Open Space and Farmland Preservation budget and the passage of HB 276, which establishes a minimum fine for vandalism of a scenic byway.
