Become a Habitat Stewart

Join our Habitat Steward trainings and help others create
Certified Wildlife Habitats.

Mentors in the community, Habitat Stewards assist friends and neighbors with the creation and restoration of landscapes that are both wildlife-friendly and good for the environment. Native wildlife, citizens of the community, and neighboring communities all feel the rewards of these efforts.

What you do as a Habitat Steward

Work with neighbors and groups

As volunteers for Delaware Nature Society, Habitat Stewards help to their neighbors, local schools, businesses, and places of worship to attain Certified Wildlife Habitat® certification. This process may include inventorying potential wildlife habitat areas, selecting appropriate native plants, documenting the project by taking photographs or making sketches, and helping others improve their gardening skills.

Other opportunities to help

As a Habitat Steward you will also have the opportunity to:
  • Provide hands-on learning opportunities for students by working with local schools to create outdoor, living classrooms
  • Promote wildlife gardening to homeowners and the general public
  • Share your expertise and train others to become Habitat Stewards

Skills needed

If you have a strong interest in the natural world, a desire to protect our environment, and a willingness to help others you'll be a great fit for the Habitat Steward team! No other experience or expertise is required to become a Habitat Steward.

We'll train you

We provide Certified Wildlife Habitat training workshops and programs throughout the year to ensure Habitat Stewards are prepared to assist community members. All Habitat Stewards attend a one-day introductory training session and then choose from a variety of programs throughout the year to enhance their knowledge of wildlife gardening and native plants and animals. Habitat Stewards are provided with a resource notebook focused on natural landscaping, habitat creation, and wildlife. Stewards also receive contact information for the Delaware Nature Society's Backyard Habitat partners (local nurseries, garden centers, and landscape professionals), other Habitat Stewards, and the National Wildlife Federation.
