Teacher Naturalist teaching kids about nature sciences

Our Education Team

Our instructors, interns and education leadership staff are passionate, highly-trained experts.

Instructors, interns and education leadership staff go through intensive training in working with children and pedagogy, environmental education techniques, natural history, van driving safety, canoe and kayak safety, and outdoor safety. All are background-checked, have certifications in first aid and CPR and are excited to share outdoor experiences with you.

Helen Fischel joined Delaware Nature Society’s Education Department in 1980. She holds a BS in Elementary Education from the University of Delaware and an MS in Education from Widener University. Helen oversees the Education Department staff at all sites (Ashland Nature Center, Abbotts Mill Nature Center, Coverdale Farm Preserve, and DuPont Environmental Education Center) and coordinates the 21 credits worth of classes through the University of Delaware.

Joe Sebastiani

Joe Sebastiani has worked for Delaware Nature Society since 1998. As a native of Kennett Square, PA, Joe attended Penn State University, where he earned a degree in Environmental Resource Management and Wildlife Science. He also has a master’s degree in Education from West Chester University.

Derek Stoner

Derek Stoner graduated from University of Delaware with a degree in Natural Resource Management and has led Delaware Nature Society programs since 2000, working in the education, land management, and natural resources departments. He enjoys creating outdoor opportunities to help connect people with nature.

Judy Montgomery

Judy Montgomery has an Elementary Education degree and was a classroom teacher for 10 years before coming to Delaware Nature Society. She now leads farm, school, seasonal programs and has created exciting summer camps such as Wizards and Lizards, Island Adventures, Tough Mudder Nature, & Camp Perseid.

Matt Babbitt is from outside Richmond, VA, and studied Outdoor Education and Communications at Longwood University, in Farmville, VA. Matt has worked as an Environmental/Outdoor Educator across the U.S.. Matt enjoys sharing his love of nature. He is a fisherman, enjoys playing guitar, makes a mean tomatillo chili, and loves to paddle.

Alice Mohrman

Alice Mohrman has been an Environmental Educator since 1986 and has explored East Coast coastal communities with students of all ages. She worked with the Seaford School District establishing Certified Wildlife Habitat Schoolyard Rain Gardens and providing an experiential curriculum to support Nanticoke River watershed.

Nora Childers graduated from Delaware State College with a BS degree in Secondary Mathematics Education and has worked as a Teacher Naturalist at Abbott's Mill Nature Center since 2000. She is also an avid knitter and enjoys doing Calculus problems just for fun.

John Harrod

John Harrod has worked for Delaware Nature Society since 2004. He holds a master’s degree in public horticulture from the University of Delaware Longwood Graduate Program and a bachelor’s degree in urban and environmental horticulture from Texas A&M University. He enjoys hiking, photography, canoeing and other outdoor pursuits.

Lesley Bensinger

Lesley Bensinger is originally from Bethlehem, PA. She received an Ecology degree at Millersville University and a Masters Degree in Marine, Estuarine, and Environmental Science at the University of Maryland Eastern Shore. Lesley loves to teach aquatic ecology programs and has a soft spot for 'new-to-nature' students.

Michele Wales has a degree in Elementary Education and 15 years of organic farming and farm-based education experience. Michele has worked to connect people to the sources of their food as the Farm Program Coordinator for over a decade and now leads the farm into the future as the Coverdale Farm Preserve Manager.

Rob Wiest

Rob Wiest graduated from Wilmington University in 2014 with a B.S.Ed. focusing on science. His background includes farming, field work for NJ Division of Fish & Wildlife, and public school education.
